"WE CALL UPON responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society."
Some practical ways I can "promote" measures that will maintain and strengthen family are vote for acts/props/etc. that are in line with the church's views on the family. I can also continue to plan to be a stay-at-home mother once I am married and have children even though I am going to pursue a career as a high school science teacher in the meantime. I can also explain why I want to do this and why I think that stay-at-home moms are so important in raising children and why I believe that being a stay-at-home mom strengthens your children and your family as a whole and best prepares them for living in the world and holding fast to the gospel and your high standards even amidst all the wickedness in the world.
"Promoting" can sometimes put us in situations that are highly charged. This video produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gives some ideas and ways in which we can be defenders and promoters, but do so without violating our covenants and without becoming hateful or un-Christian-like.
One insight I received from watching the video is that it can be really hard to remain calm and reasonable when debating with someone who is attacking and assuming your beliefs and not taking the time to actually listen to what you are saying. Another insight I gained is that taking the time to study (and not just read- actually study) the scriptures and words of general authorities and praying and pondering about how to talk with someone about your beliefs without becoming angry, unreasonable, harsh, etc. can really help you with those situations. Lastly, a third insight I gained from watching the video is that it's important to take the time to know, ask about, and understand the other person's beliefs and where they are coming from before trying to explain and defend your own. This helps the other person feel like they are being respected and listened to, and helps you to be able to better explain your beliefs in a way that they might better understand them and where you are coming from.
